VISIT TO HOLKER HALL AND CARTMEL PRIORY
Wednesday 15 May 2019

Our Spring Outing is to the sumptuous House and Gardens of Holker Hall in Cumbria. Built originally in the early 1600s.with its lavish interiors, it has been home to the families of the Prestons, the Lowthers and the Cavendishes, who still live there today. A new wing in a magnificent neo-Jacobean Gothis style was added during Victorian times. The extensive gardens include the massive Great Holker Lime, a labyrinth and many exotic plants. It was BBC Countryfile Garden of the Year in 2016.

We will be given a private tour of this elegant and historic house, before which refreshments will be available, followed by a light soup and sandwich lunch. In the afternoon we will drive to the village of Cartmel to visit its famous Priory and the imposing Gatehouse-Tower constructed in 1330-40 as a defence against the Scottish raiders, loyal to Robert the Bruce.
