TRAILS OF DISCOVERY
WHAT ARE THEY?
The Arts Society has recent years developed the concept of using trails as a way of learning and developing knowledge, understanding, and skills particularly amongst children, but also for people living with dementia.
1. TRAILS FOR CHILDREN
The Arts Society Trails of Discovery are for children aged 8-12 years. They guide them around places of worship or historic buildings looking at art, artefacts, architecture and history. A corresponding answer sheet is provided for accompanying adults.
Our Children’s Trails encourage young people to learn about and to enjoy the stories behind the local landmarks.
2. TOWN TRAILS
The aim of these is to encourage the younger inhabitants to explore their town, looking at its art, architecture, and local history whilst engaging in a fun activity.
This type of Trail does not have an answer sheet, all the information can be found looking at information en route.
3. MEMORY TRAILS
Memory Trails are especially for people living with dementia and are created with the help of Psychiatric and Dementia professionals. The Trails takes the person who has dementia and their family or carer around their local church or historic building, looking and touching objects, evoking memories and stimulating conversation.
At the moment TASDAG Members have not undertaken the establishment of any type of Trail, but if you feel this is something that would be of interest to you and would LIKE TO KNOW MORE, we would be very happy to help get a small group together, or you could work with a friend. Please contact our Chairman, Sarah McConnel, or email her at dumfriesgalloway@theartssociety.org for more information.
